InsurrectionID : Matt Brackley

Profiling insurrectionists in New England

Matt Brackley

Before the Coup…

Matt was born and raised in New Vineyard, Maine, currently resides in Waldoboro, Maine, and is a father of three [1]. According to his Facebook page, he is currently the Owner and President of Brackley Electric, an electric company with a location in Bath, Maine [2], studied Marine Electrical Technology at Maine Maritime Academy, and as cited on his own website, he actually has a lot of work experience for someone who was all up in the capitol.

What Did He Do?

According to the FBI, this is what went down with Brackley at the Capitol.

He flew from Portland, Maine to Washington, D.C. to go to the Stop the Steal Rally before arriving at the Capitol around 1:40 P.M where a group of protesters were already gathered. He stood in a crowd close to the Lower West Terrace where rows of bike rack barricades and police officers were trying to ward off the rioters from getting into the capitol.

Then, Brackley went up to a set of stairs that were underneath the scaffolding that was put up for the Inaugural stage. The tarp that was on the scaffolding was ripped by the other rioters that were scaling it, which only made it easier for him and the other rioters to to make their way up the stairs, towards the building, and Brackley entering the Capitol through the Senate Wing Door at 2:23 P.M before making his way to the Crypt where a group of rioters were gathered.

At this time, the insurrectionist overwhelmed the line of police officers in order to gain more access to the building. Then, Brackley along with a few dozen other insurrectionists went into a hallway behind the Crypt before getting stopped by the officers; and then eventually got past them and went further down the hall.

Brackley went through the Rotunda and into the Senate Chamber that was evacuated moments earlier. He then got stopped by USCP officers, two of which told him to “back up,” and one of them gave him a “small push” backwards, but he refused to retreat. Instead, he asked where Pelosi’s office was while the rest of the crew of rowdy rioters shouted out obscenities. After a 40 second conversation with the cops, he turned around to the rioters behind him and yelled “Let’s go!” before extending his elbows out and pushing through the two officers with his crowd of insurrectionists behind him.

Until he got stopped by a bigger group of officers with riot gear in the hallway that he was going down. They had formed a police line to which the rioters pushed against them, leading to a standstill between the tyrants and the officers. In the crowd, Brackley was welling “Fuck McConnell” before the insurrectionists began to push up against the officers while chanting “USA” [5]

Brackley eventually left the Capitol through the South Door at 3:05 P.M after an officer sprayed a chemical spray in the hallway. Then he was arrested by the FBI on July 21, 2023 in Waldoboro, Maine for these charges:

    1. Felony offenses of assault, resisting, or impending certain officers

    1. Civil Disorder

    1. Misdemeanor offenses which include entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds

    1. Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds

    1. Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds

    1. Disorderly conduct in a capitol building

    1. Act of physical violence in the capitol grounds or buildings

    1. Parading, picketing, and demonstrating in a capitol building [6]

He was ordered to pay $3.000 in fines and got sentenced to 24 months on supervised release. He could have been sentenced to 30 months in prison with $2,000 in restitution for damage to the Capitol building along with $95,000 in fines!  He plead guilty to the one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers [7].

The Aftermath

I first heard about Brackley after seeing a post online about an event hosted by Topsham Baptist Church that he would be attending that was being put on by The Cumberland, York, Sagadahoc & Lincoln County Republican Committees, where they explained on the Cumberland County Republican Committee website that Brackley was grateful for the get out of jail free card that he got from Trump. And they also highlight the fact that Brackley would be able to tell his side of the story [8].

So let’s be fair and balanced and listen to what he has to say.

In an interview with News Center Maine, he says that he’s regretful for his actions and also says that “it is not a place where people are being rehabilitated.” Part of me appreciates the fact that conservatives realize that the prison system in the United States is God awful, but I really don’t want to hear it from a Jan 6 rioter. And he also believes that the law enforcement in the capitol had “started a lot of the violence that happened.”

He said that he had “followed not just the politician but the man,” and that he was “convinced” that he would have pardoned him and all of the rioters.

In the interviews, he says that he didn’t shove any of the officers, but News Center Maine was quick to tell the viewers that federal prosecutors said that he did push through the officers which he is “gravely” regretful for. He feels regretful because of “the action itself” he told the reporter because it was unproductive, rather than the consequences.

In a video from the event, he says that he believes in following the law even though he believes that the election got stolen before his speech got interrupted by a protester [9], and there were also a group of protestors outside of the establishment as well.
